Most of the small businesses, they struggle with their marketing. Often people assume that SEO is the most affordable strategy for their business. Actually, its the most costly and time-consuming strategy for any business. If you have most of the basic SEO things right then it totally depends on the keyword competition. If you are selecting the long tail keywords then you will get ranks quickly and then slowly you can optimise the site for root keywords. Imagine the whole process of optimizing and running various campaigns and doing all other stuff for 2-3 keywords. If they don’t bring the quality traffic then your efforts are wasted. If you ask me honestly, I would say don’t keep this as a primary lead generation strategy for your business. It takes time and also lots of efforts to get something to rank on the Google and get the traffic. As an SEO consultant in Pune, I have worked with many small businesses and startups. I have often consulted for their entire lead generation process. When I see an industry, I quickly analyze its target market and audience. If your audience hangs out more on Facebook then it is not wise spending too much of efforts on the Google and getting the traffic there. You can directly go to Facebook and run ads and get quick results. You have to choose your marketing mix very carefully, analyze everything, check your target audience, competition, demographics of your customer, cost of advertising, cost of sale etc then make proper marketing decisions. Ideally, SEO should be your secondary channel for lead generation for the first couple of years of business and when you get enough authority in the market shift more focus on it.
SEO vs Adwords? Which one is better?
Most of the times we come across this decision whether to invest in paid campaigns or do the organic activities. In my opinion, both will be equal. It depends on the industry you are in. e.g if you are in e-commerce industry then SEO will be a wrong choice because you may already have lots of competition from big players and again AdWords will be costly too. But still, you can survive with AdWords by targetting long tails attracting traffic with more promotions etc.

What About Mobile SEO?
If you analyze the traffic you will see more than 40% of current traffic is coming through mobile. Your site should be mobile responsive and should follow the mobile guidelines. You can quickly check if your site is mobile friendly or not through below link
You need to use AMP for pages to load pages quickly on the mobile device, this will speed up the site and will help you to get ranks quickly. You can hire SEO consultant or SEO technical expert to quickly implement the AMP for your site and make your site mobile friendly.
But mobile SERP is very different than the web SERP. Also, the behavior of the visitors is very different than web visitors, most of the time I have seen users tend to click the Ads is they are the first results in the Google. Even if you are at top of the Google for mobile ads you will get more conversions. In this case, SEO tends to struggle though you achieve the first rank you will still find it difficult to pull the traffic.
